Strengthening Cybersecurity With Public-Private Partnerships
Fortinet's Derek Manky on How Collaborative Tools Can Improve Intelligence SharingPublic-private partnerships form a vital defense against the growing sophistication of cyberthreats. Collaboration between entities such as Interpol, NATO and the Cyber Threat Alliance and implementation of technology frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK facilitate real-time sharing of threat intelligence, said Derek Manky, chief security strategist and vice president for global threat intelligence at Fortinet.

Artificial intelligence enhances threat intelligence capabilities by filtering relevant data and streamlining operations, Manky said. Although substantial progress has been made, challenges remain, including regulatory constraints and a persistent skills gap, he said.
To overcome these barriers, Manky recommends integrating AI-powered solutions to automate threat detection and enhance response times.
"They [cybercriminals] are weaponizing artificial intelligence. And what that means is that the time to exploit for attackers is under five days now. When new weaknesses come out, attackers hop on it and operationalize their campaign within five days. So, from a CISO perspective, we need to move quicker," Manky said.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the GovWare Conference and Exhibition 2024, Manky also discussed:
- The metrics to assess the success of a public-private partnership program;
- The importance of a collaborative platform that unites stakeholders from law enforcement, academia and the private sector;
- Strategies for building bi-directional sharing models across sectors.
With more than 15 years of experience in the cybersecurity industry, Manky has helped develop collaborative security frameworks. As an expert in threat intelligence and cybercrime, he has helped build public and private sector relationships and advises global leaders and heads of state on strategic security initiatives.
