Pavan Duggal, advocate, Supreme Court, says the government of India needs to take specific steps now that the Supreme Court has declared privacy as a fundamental right.

"India does not have a dedicated legal framework for data privacy. There are some aspects of personal privacy being covered under Information Technology Act," Duggal says. But these provisions are no longer adequate, he stresses, and the government must take action to beef up privacy protections.
In an interview at Information Security Media Group's recent New Delhi Fraud and Breach Prevention Summit, Duggal, who was a featured speaker, discusses:
- Why the government of India should come out with specific rules under the IT Act to implement a privacy law;
- Effective legal remedies and redress mechanisms to address privacy violation concerns;
- How data privacy will impact the "Digital India" movement.
