ISMG Editors: Final Review of RSA Conference 2023

Storm Clouds Are Brewing Over 'Secure by Design,' AI, Privacy and Regulations
Rahul Neel Mani, Mathew Schwartz, Anna Delaney, Michael Novinson and Tom Field

As the Information Security Media Group editors wrapped up their coverage of RSA Conference 2023, everyone agreed that it was good to have the cybersecurity community back together in one place, working to solve the serious issues it faces. To cite the conference theme, the community is "Stronger Together."

Among those pressing issues, said Mathew Schwartz, executive editor of DataBreachToday and Europe, are the ongoing Russian cyber operations and the "scary" prospects of AI being used to create malware. And cybersecurity companies are dealing with the fact that machines are doing more and more and the need to find the right mix of AI/ML and people, said Michael Novinson, managing editor, business.

"There are things that are grim," said Tom Field, senior vice president, editorial. "We've got the largest potential attack surface in history. We've got adversaries that are more relentless than ever. We've got nation-state adversaries that are bearing down on targets. But to borrow a line from our keynote speaker, Eric Idle, 'Always look on the bright side of life.'"

The members of the Editors Panel at RSA - Rahul Neel Mani, vice president of community engagement and editorial; Schwartz; Anna Delaney, director, productions; Novinson and Field - also discuss:

  • How CISOs are increasingly focused on the business - and specifically, how to secure it;
  • The business conversations around monetizing AI and securing proprietary large language models;
  • The "regulatory tension" between government and technology manufacturers over "secure by design."
