Gartner's Litan on Endpoint Detection, Behavioral Analytics

Longtime Fraud Researcher Broadens Focus to Include Key Security Technologies

Gartner analyst Avivah Litan has long been the go-to expert for insights on fraud detection. Now she has broadened her focus to cover endpoint security and user and entity behavioral analytics. Where do these topics converge, and what insights can she share on the 2017 cybersecurity outlook?

"The techniques that fraud has been using for decades have finally moved into security," Litan, a Gartner vice president, says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "It's very early days, though, [but] these techniques include advanced analytics, machine learning, profiling and supervised and unsupervised learning. We've seen all that for years, since Falcon [fraud prevention software] started with credit cards. Now we're starting to see that in security."

In one recent blog post on user and entity behavioral analytics, Litan notes that the UEBA market is likely to double from $100 million in 2016 to $200 million in 2017 - but will likely disappear altogether by 2022. Why?

"It's basically because security is getting smarter," she says, and the hallmarks of UEBA - profiling, anomalous behavior detection, etc. - will be "mainstreamed" into other security markets, such as endpoint security and identity and access management. "Machine learning and artificial intelligence are very much changing the landscape," she adds. "So, [UEBA] won't be a separate market anymore; it'll just be integrated with other markets."

Endpoint Detection and Response

In another post, Litan showcases the $500 million endpoint detection and response market and why she believes its vendors face significant market challenges not just from competitors, but from users' demands for consolidation.

"Clients don't want to do a lot of system integration. They want to reduce the number of vendors they're working with," she says. "So, the vendors that are successful ... are offering broader platforms than just endpoint detection and response."

In an interview about her latest areas of research (see audio link below photo), Litan discusses:

  • Why she believes the red-hot UEBA market will disappear within five years;
  • The future of endpoint detection and response;
  • Organizations' appetite for new security investments.

The technologies mentioned by Litan, and many others, will be on display at RSA Conference 2017 in San Francisco Feb. 13-17. Litan will be in attendance as well.

Litan is a vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner Research. Her areas of expertise include endpoint security; security analytics for cybersecurity and fraud; user and entity behavioral analytics; insider threats; fraud detection and prevention; and identity proofing.
