As the threat landscape evolves, it becomes a game of survival of the fittest. Only the best attacks and attackers remain standing, and the result is a series of targeted ransomware attacks that now cost global enterprises millions of dollars per year. This is among the important findings of the Sophos 2019 Threat Report.

"Capitalistic cybercriminals are still at the control, and they are still finding lots of ways to generate income, whether it's through advanced ransomware or cryptomining," says Dan Schiappa, senior vice president and GM, products, with Sophos.

Further, Schiappa says, the attackers are changing tactics. "They're not just relying on a faulty user clicking a link," he says. "They're using more advanced approaches. In some cases, they're using tools that already exist in the machines they're attacking."

In an interview about the Sophos 2019 Threat Report, Schiappa discusses:

  • Key findings on the latest targeted attacks;
  • How cybercriminals are refining their tactics and using tools embedded in users' machines;
  • Strategies and tools that defenders can employ to improve their threat detection and response.

For more information and analysis, the Sophos 2019 Threat Report is now available for review.

Schiappa is senior vice president and general manager, Sophos end-user and network security groups. In this role, he is responsible for the overall product strategy, product management, architecture, research and development, product quality and release plans for both groups, including recent innovations in next-generation endpoint and firewall products.
