Digital Payments in Japan: Addressing Security
Jeremy King, international director of the PCI Security Standards Council

As Japan continues it push toward digital transactions, it's taking steps to ensure security, including adopting the PCI Data Security Standard, says Jeremy King, international director of the PCI Security Standards Council (see: How New PCI Standard Eases Move to Cashless Transactions).

"Japan has been going through quite a transformation with their payments," King says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "This has been led by the Japanese government's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which wanted to ensure that Japan moved toward the adoption and implementation of the global credit and debit card."

As Japan ramps up digital payments, including the use of EMV payment cards, "they are pushing the adoption of PCI DSS following other countries and other regions that are doing the same," King say. "They can see there need to be good levels of digital payments security."

In this interview (see audio link below image), King also discusses:

  • Factors pushing digital payments in Japan;
  • Measures taken by the government in Japan to secure digital payments;
  • Security challenges in the nation.

King leads the PCI Security Standards Council's efforts to increase international adoption and awareness of the PCI Data Security Standards. His chief responsibilities include gathering feedback from the merchant and vendor community, coordinating research and analysis of PCI SSC-managed standards through all international markets and driving education efforts and council membership recruitment.
