India's proposed new 2020 National Cybersecurity Policy is designed to help build a cyber-resilient nation that can deal with contemporary technological challenges, Lt. Gen (retired) Rajesh Pant, national cybersecurity coordinator in the prime minister's office, explains in this in-depth interview.

The policy, which will replace a version adopted in 2013 , will address emerging technology challenges for 2020 through 2025, such as those stemming from the internet of things, cryptocurrencies and ransomware, he says. The government is now accepting comments on its proposal.

"The strategy ideally should be technology agnostic. Today we have 5G; tomorrow 6G will be here. And we cannot fall in the technology trap. Whatever we do should cater for what happens in the technology world, and we definitely have to be aware of what is expected to come in five years," Pant says in an interview with Information Security Media Group.

In this interview (see audio link below photo), Pant offers insights on:

  • Strategies for meeting policy objectives;
  • The reasons for creation of cyberdefense agency;
  • The potential impact of the pending data protection and privacy bill;
  • How the attack surface has changed;
  • Contemporary technologies to be addressed in the new policy framework

As national cybersecurity coordinator in the national security council of India at PMO, Pant is responsible for coordinating all cybersecurity activities across multiple sectors to ensure a secure and resilient cyberspace. He holds a PhD in information security metrics.
