Are organizations making the same security mistakes with APIs today that they made with their websites 10 years ago? Jeffrey Costa of Akamai Technologies says yes, and offers insight on securing and caching APIs.

Costa, Senior Product Manager, Web Experience, at Akamai, says he is seeing common mistakes - and he understands why.

"The folks who develop APIs are very different from the team that develops a company's website," he says. They may not have learned the lessons that the web teams know. "Common mistakes includes things like unnecessary bloat of API responses, making too many round trips for content; not using cache layers; and ignoring some of the low-hanging protocol fruit."

Costa is a Senior Product Manager in the Web Performance division at Akamai. With over 18 years of IT experience and almost six years at Akamai, Jeff is responsible for driving the delivery of Akamai's API-focused products. Before joining Akamai, Jeff was a Solution Architect at SITA (Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques) and an Engineer at Lend Lease (commercial real estate). Jeff holds an MBA from the University of Dayton, as well as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Pragmatic Marketing Level Six (PMC-VI) certifications.
