BSA's Jared Ragland on Overcoming Challenges
Balancing Privacy, Technology Advancement

Efforts to protect privacy must be carefully balanced against the need to practically implement advanced technologies, argues Jared Ragland, senior director for policy in APAC at BSA/The Software Alliance, an advocacy group for software companies.

"If policies are not properly developed to maximize both the protection of personal information on the one hand but [at the same time] building in the flexibilities necessary for the digital ecosystem to continue to flourish, we are going to have some challenges," Ragland says in an interview with Information Security Media Group.

In this interview, (see audio link below image), Ragland also discusses:

  • Why nations should work toward developing similar privacy requirements;
  • Why he believes data localization efforts in India are impractical;
  • How privacy policie s could make it more difficult to implement artificial intelligence.

Ragland serves as senior director of policy for APACat BSA/The Software Alliance. He develops BSA's international strategies to open markets and promote innovation and digital trade in the Asia-Pacific region. Previously, Ragland served as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's intellectual property rights attaché for the Shanghai consulate general.
