Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Beyond the Hype

Grant Wernick of Insight Engines on Understanding the Nuances
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Beyond the Hype

Companies offering cybersecurity products are using the terms "artificial intelligence" and "machine learning" in many different ways. But the real meanings of the terms are far more nuanced than marketing hyperbole would lead us to believe, says Grant Wernick of Insight Engines, which develops natural language processing technology.

" If you think of it from a marketing standpoint, it's much more fun to say 'artificial intelligence.' It's like Rosie in the Jetsons," Wernick says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. But too often, the term is applied to products that don't really qualify, he asserts.

Machine learning, a subset of AI, is beginning to be successfully applied for such uses as e-mail filtering, anomaly detection and anti-virus, Wernick says.

"ML is pretty incredible, but it's still in its infancy," Wernick says. "It's not as if these machines are learning by themselves. It's humans constantly tweaking and constantly training them and making them better at something very specific."

In the interview (see audio link below photo), Wernick also discusses:

  • The components of artificial intelligence and machine learning;
  • How to distinguish genuine AI/ML solutions from marketing hype;
  • Cybersecurity applications of AI and ML.

Wernick is the co-founder and CEO of Insight Engines. Previously, he was the CEO and co-founder of Weotta, a natural language local search app used in over 1,000 U.S. cities.
