The problem of piracy is very unique to the media industry, and implementation of new security tools can vary widely across different companies. Few vendors focus on this industry, which means Kumar had to develop his own solutions.
"This is the space where I had to put on my innovation hat and think differently to solve the problem," he said. "We realized that this is one pain point which the industry is not able to solve, largely because tools are not available and it is not easy to pinpoint where the problem is."
To begin, Kumar and his team went to the adversary. They engaged with the pirates discreetly to understand their modus operandi. "The next stage was to build something to prevent it," he said.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at ISMG's Dynamic CISO Excellence Awards and Conference, Kumar discusses:
- How Zee Entertainment developed tools to control piracy;
- Why vendors overlook the impact of piracy;
- The challenges of developing anti-piracy tools.
