CyberEdBoard Profiles in Leadership: Dom Lucas
BII's Head of Security on Cybersecurity Leadership and Lifelong LearningDom Lucas, head of security at British International Investment, began his career in law enforcement, handling computer fraud and cybercrime. Working on the front lines gave Lucas the ability to navigate complex situations and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. "One of the things law enforcement teaches you is the fundamental skills of being able to deal and talk to people," he said.

This, Lucas said, proved essential in his cybersecurity leadership role, where communication is often just as critical as technical expertise. Cybersecurity is a people-driven industry that requires the ability to influence and connect with others, he said.
"Cybersecurity is about influencing, understanding and questioning people to find out why they do certain things and undertake certain activities," Lucas said. "As I transitioned into cybersecurity, I learned to talk to network engineers, senior managers and government officials, understanding that people have different drivers and that not one answer is always going to fit every situation."
Lucas advises future cybersecurity leaders to remain curious and resilient and adapt to evolving challenges for long-term success.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Cybersecurity Summit: London, conducted as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Lucas also discussed:
- How interpersonal skills drive effective leadership;
- The importance of continuous learning in cybersecurity;
- Guidance for first-time security leaders.
