COVID-19: Remote Workforce Security Strategies

Akamai's Security Leaders Offer Timely Insights
Prasad Mandava and Bruno Goveas of Akamai

Very few organizations were prepared to ensure their workforce can securely work at home during the COVID-19 crisis, says Prasad Mandava, vice president of engineering and the managing director of Akamai Technologies India. Handling the scaling up of security for a remote workforce can prove challenging, he says.

“When you put in the traditional layers of security, your experience can become much slower,” he says. “Akamai has been ready to work remotely for many years. We rolled out a robust unified communications program where we enable audio, video and chat on the same platform. We also rolled out dual-factor authentication, largely eliminating the need for passwords, and we have single sign-on for hundreds of enterprise applications.”

Bruno Goveas, strategic sales director, India, says Akamai is getting two common requests from organizations looking for guidance on security for the remote workforce.

“One is to scale reliably, to support the entire workforce without the need for hardware upgrade and installation and administration,” he says. The second is … providing access to internal applications without exposing the company network to the internet.”

Goveas adds: “Applying security at the edge of the internet, closer to end-users, and enabling secure access without exposing your data center to the internet, is how Akamai has been able to keep our customers safe.”

In this joint video interview with Information Security Media Group, Mandava and Goveas also discuss:

  • How Akamai helped its employees make the transition to work from home;
  • Recommendations to organizations working on their business continuity plans;
  • How Akamai is remotely conducting business with its clients.
