While ransomware attacks are largely viewed as cybersecurity incidents, there are critical data privacy concerns that must always be top of mind, says Jodi R. Daniels, founder and CEO of privacy consultancy Red Clover Advisors.

"You have to know your data. You cannot even figure out the extent of a ransomware event if you don't know what data you have, where it is," and the sensitivity of the information that is affected, she says. "The whole premise about privacy is trust. Organizations need to be able to communicate to their customers that they can be trusted with their data."
