Accelerating Cyberthreat Response Times

Wesley Mullins, CTO of Deepwatch, on Overcoming Response Hurdles
Wesley Mullins, CTO, Deepwatch

Trying to respond manually to threats solely as a cyber team that does not have control over the entire IT ecosystem can severely slow down response times, says Wesley Mullins, CTO of Deepwatch.

"Having more accurate, high-fidelity alerting is what's needed to get to a rapid response state," he says.

"When you have thousands of alerts coming in, there's very low confidence in what those alerts are - if they're benign or if they're truly malicious. You can't build response on that because the chance and opportunity to take down business-critical systems is going to be very high."

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2022, Mullins also discusses:

  • Other factors that slow down cyber response;
  • Response issues related to ransomware attacks;
  • Why there is often hesitancy to adopt automated security solutions.

Mullins is responsible for Deepwatch's product and solutions vision and road map, and he leads the organization that develops the Deepwatch platform used to deliver the company’s managed detection and response service. He was previously CIO and CISO of Deepwatch. Prior to that, Mullins was the vice president of global cyber at Nielsen, and before that he held various cyber roles at PwC and TECO Energy.
